Caught up with Day 1?
With just two days to explore Luxembourg City, we headed back somewhere which we were introduced to on yesterday’s Promenade Tour. The Bock Casemates is 23km of underground tunnels which were used as shelter during the wars. Now one of the city’s biggest attractions, we headed there armed with our Luxembourg Cards* which gave us free entry.
The long uneven tunnels and incredibly steep stairways were all so spooky and chilling, and the temperature down there was pretty chilly too! But all in all it was quite an experience and gave a real feeling of what it may have been like to have had to use this area for its original purpose.
The views from the peepholes and gaps in the stone also gave amazing views of the old town and masses of green space that Luxembourg has. It is Europe’s green capital!
Keen to learn more about the history, we hopped on the Pétrusse Express which includes earphones and a running commentary on your surroundings. We passed through many parts which we hadn’t yet seen, and although it was a bit of a bumpy ride with many of the streets being cobbled, we managed just one or two photos which weren’t blurred.
Again getting a discounted price with the Luxembourg Card, the trip was only about 45 minutes. With the city being so small, that was plenty of time to enrich our knowledge of this wonderful place.
