With just two days to explore Luxembourg, we kicked off our adventures with an introductory tour of Luxembourg City with their Promenade Tour. Kicking off at William Square in the city centre, we toured for two hours, taking in the sights of this incredibly historic and picturesque city.
Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe, we were surprised to learn that it is one of the most diverse in terms of people living and working there. There are over 150 different nationalities, yet the population is only 600,000 and the capital’s population is around 100,000.
Compare this to London which has a ginormous population of 8.8 million, and we can really appreciate the radically different nature and lifestyle that Luxembourg provides to both it’s inhabitants and tourists.
Our extremely knowledgeable guide, Alma, took us through the main squares of the city, some of which looked considerably more touristy than others. But mostly, the streets were calm and the atmosphere appeared sophisticated and relaxed. From the square we went through The Palace of Grand Dukes, Chamber of Deputies, Place d’Armes, Petrusse Casemates, and perhaps more importantly, eyed up dessert for afterwards at The Chocolate House!
We plan to go back and explore a couple of the sites we saw at a more leisurely pace tomorrow. We were particularly intrigued by Bock Casemates which is an underground network of tunnels and galleries, which were built as protection and shelter during the wars. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go in, but now open as an attraction, we can’t wait to go and explore more!
So much information and knowledge was shared in just two hours and we wish we could give it all to you again here, but that would be unfair, so if you do find yourself in Luxembourg, give this tour a go! A massive thank you to Alma and all at the Promenade Tour for having us!
