Beautiful Views & Hostel Celica | Ljubljana Day 1

Caught up with AmsterdamBerlinPragueViennaBudapest & Zagreb?

With the trains from Zagreb to Ljubljana much less frequent than our journeys so far, we had to wait until 12.30pm for our train today. The journey was however our shortest so far at just 2 hours and 30 minutes. It was also the most scenic journey I have personally ever taken of any type, and I really don’t believe these pictures do it justice. The train ran right along the River Sava for the majority of the route, with the hills, mountains and gorges making it quite an entertaining time for us.

The train was a Hogwarts Express compartment style, and we actually got a six seater all to ourselves! It gave us the chance to play around with the GoPro with the windows open, so hopefully the vlog footage turns out well!

From Ljubljana station it took us just ten minutes to arrive at our home for the next two nights – Hostel Celica.* This is no ordinary hostel as it is a former prison and retains many of the features used in the 100 year period of it being used for prison purposes.

After 10 years of renovation, transformation and the work of over 80 incredible artists and designers, in 2003 the very same building was open for business as a hostel. Each of the rooms, or cells is completely different from the other, and has the artist to whom the work is accredited to by the room number sign on the door.

It’s pretty incredible and a little creepy and we can’t wait to find out more when we’re given a full tour by one of the managers tomorrow. But for now, we’ll give you some info about our cell 116.

Our cell is named ‘the eye,’ as the lifted bed is circular and represents the room’s iris and pupil. The walls are painted, drawn on and designed by hand and on one of the walls the lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Tower Song’ is etched on to it.

It is literally unique, special and something we won’t be forgetting about! Keep checking back over the next couple of days to find out more about Hostel Celica!
