Avocado, salmon and poached egg on sourdough toast – £6.50 – James
We are back in Brighton! Again, a spontaneous visit, bur ever since we eyed up this place on our last trip here, we knew exactly where our first stop would be.
Cafe Coho is an award winning espresso bar and cafe, nestled by the lanes of Brighton’s centre. Upon arriving we made our own way upstairs and I, James contemplated the menu. Jessica already had her heart set on a sausage roll after seeing it when we first came in. With it being roughly 11am at this point and having hardly any food yet, we ordered quickly and we’re so looking forward to what would be landing on our table shortly after. The coffees were delightful and the sausage roll was perfection, complete with extra spice crumbly pastry.
With my Salmon, Avacado and Eggs on sourdough being freshly prepared, I was ready for it to a little while longer. *Queue rant…*
20 minutes passed and I had to go back downstairs, only to return seconds later as I was quickly ushered away with a wave of a hand and the kind words of “nah nah, it’s coming.” Right, okay then, maybe I was a little impatient.
Flat white and Chai latte – £2.85 each
With the sausage roll completely devoured and still no sign of food on my side of the table, I asked again. “It’s coming,” he said. I didn’t know whether to believe the doubting and worried look on the man’s face. Clearly he didn’t bother to actually check as tables came and went, all full and ready for the day ahead. This whilst we were left checking the day’s sunset time, staring out of the window pondering the effectiveness of Vitamin D through glass, and wiping the tumble weed away from our eyes.
50 mins had now passed, and downstairs I went again. This time, realisation that the food had never “been coming,” rather forgotten about. One lady rushed into the kitchen and soon after arrived upstairs to realise that another table were also missing their food after a long wait.
They were quite simply having a mare.
Chorizo and chilli sausage roll – £3.50
One hour and two minutes after ordering, alas, food was here. They say that good things come to those who wait – not sure the moral applies in this situation, but it was definitely true. It was delicious and a lot larger than expected. Simple additions such as the balsamic vinegar and seeds gave it extra dimensions and the egg was perfectly runny.
Now I was looking forward to my promised “free something” to follow, well all three waiters forgot about that and we couldn’t wait any longer. We left with no acknowledgement and it was onwards with our day.
We do admit that we are sure on a normal day that Cafe Coho lives up to it’s reputable name, but unfortunately for us, today was a very, very bad day at the office.
