Restaurant: Sticks’n’Sushi, Covent Garden – London

Ebi Bites – Tempura shrimp, miso aïoli, chili, lime & coriander £ 7.80

A few months ago, Jessica became a Godmother to Zian, our friend Zedrick’s son. With it being his 4th birthday last week, it was only proper to dine out and celebrate, give presents, and get to spend time Zian, Zedrick, and his girlfriend Nina.

Grilled edamame beans £4.70

It was suggested that we come here by Zedrick, as it his workplace, of course knowing what’s good and how suitable it is for young children too. We met them at Covent Garden and walked right over to the restaurant.

I, James have never been a massive fan of sushi, so the menu didn’t mean much to me in all honesty. Step in expert Zedrick, who ordered for Jessica and I the Perfect Day platter, which included all of the following…

Shake Tataki –  Seared salmon, kizami wasabi, daikon, cress & ponzu £ 9.50

Edamame with salt and lemon

Kani Korokke, crab croquettes with wasabi caesar

Nigiri: Seared salmon, tuna and avocado

Maki: Spicy tuna, crispy ebi and rice paper with duck and coma

Tatami: Seared salmon, kizami wasabi, daikon, cress & ponzu

Sticks: Emmental cheese wrapped in bacon, chicken with chili dip, teriyaki & spring onion and lamb chop with miso herb butter

I’m hardly a sushi expert, but even I could tell the difference in quality between all of this and what I’ve had before. I genuinely really liked each part of the platter and other small bites. It came at a hefty price, but it was certainly worth it for a treat, especially considering it was to celebrate Zian’s birthday. For him, they do children’s boxes full of small amounts of sushi, edamame and rice, all going down well with the little man!

Also for the children, they have special easy to use, smaller and tied together chopsticks! I say for the children, but also for people like me who need a helping hand with the sticks – it was a revolution!

A special mention goes to the Wagyu beef (pictured below). It comes from any of four Japanese breeds of beef cattle, renowned for quality and a very high price. Zedrick very kindly treated us to some, and now we know why he wanted us to have it. It literally melted without barely having to bite into it, succulent and tasty. It was over in a flash, but it was certainly a flash of brilliance!

Wagyu Yaki – Japanese wagyu beef from Kyushu Island, served with salt, pepper & lemon £15/stick

It was fantastic to catch up with the three of them on Sunday and you can expect more posts of us being with them in the not too distant future! Sticks n Sushi comes highly recommended for any sushi lover, who is prepared to splash out on some great, great food, service and relaxing atmosphere.
