Today we had the pleasure of being invited to the book publisher, Penguin Random House’s blogger breakfast briefing, as part of their The Happy Foodie division. Held in a beautiful building on The Strand, their offices on the 10th floor overlooking London’s Saturday morning was absolutely stunning.
As well as being able to boast their publishing of household names such as Jamie Oliver, they have a great interest in giving chances to promising talents, and propelling writer’s, photographer’s and illustrator’s careers into something great.
Proof that this was something that has been extremely successful for them was their guests that were in attendance. Shu Han Lee, owner of the ‘Mummy I Can Cook’ brand, and author, illustrator and photographer (she is one talented woman!) of her book, ‘Chicken and Rice’, was there to talk about her experiences of blogging and the transition into book writing.
As the name suggests, her brand was created off the back off wanting to prove to her Mum that she has no need to worry about her daughter not being able to cook when she flew the nest. Safe to say she has done that now!
Sophie Missing and Caroline Craig were up next to talk about their publishings together. They shared fascinating stories about how they met in the work canteen, and how they clicked over talks about their packed lunches. Friendship beckoned and the inspiration behind their first book, ‘The Little Book of Brunch” was a compilation of easy but not typical working day lunch ideas.
Their second publishing ‘The Corner Shop Cookbook’ soon followed, and in similar vein to their first book, they are soon to launch ‘The Little Book of Brunch.’
But no doubt the star of today’s show was the mastermind and creator behind the famous ‘Symmetry Breakfast,’ Michael Zee. His Instagram account has taken him from cooking breakfast for himself and his boyfriend, to stardom. Having gained a 650k following on Instagram, he published his first book earlier this year and was there to talk about his experiences from start to finish, interviewed by fellow publisher, Felicity Cloake.
Besides the interviewing room was a room especially for bloggers to get their Instagram flat-lay photos, with props and cookbooks aplenty to choose from. Jessica was feeling the pressure as only three feet away from her photographing the ‘Cook Love Share’ book by Symmetry Breakfast, was the man himself!
After the talks, we began to mingle some more and talk to the Michael on a one to one basis. You may ask what do you say to such a guy, but he was such a down to earth, friendly guy who talked to us about everything from photography, to Donald Trump, to Penis Fish (that is not a typo!)
On our way out we were given a goodie bag each with just some of the cookbooks being talked about at the event, and displayed around the rooms. We were delighted to find that amongst Shu Han Lee’s and Rick Stein’s, was Michael’s ‘Cook Love Share’ book, which he kindly signed for us.
This event has definitely inspired us to hone down on our home cooking skills, and there could’ve been no better way to spend a Saturday morning! Hearing everybody’s stories and talking to other bloggers was fascinating!
